Day 10: Spiritual Blindness

John 9:39-41

Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”

Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

Comments

Jesus often said, “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” He could just as easily have said, “Whoever has eyes, let them see” because spiritual infirmity was keeping people from hearing God’s voice or seeing God’s work.

Physical blindness can result from many diseases. So can spiritual blindness. Pride, greed, envy, fear and a host of other things can blind us to the reality of God’s love for us and for others.

Blindness means being unable to see; prejudice means being unwilling to see.

Reflections

What examples from today’s world come to mind when you think of spiritual blindness or prejudice?

Sometimes we fail to see the image of God in others because what they have done (or what has been done to them) obscures that image so completely. At other times, we fail to see because of our own blindness or prejudice. Which of these is the bigger obstacle for you?

Prayer

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, for you open our eyes to discover that which is truly amazing. Make us aware of anything that keeps us from seeing people as you see them.
