Day 12: Appearances

1 Samuel 16:6-7

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Comments

Dustin Hoffman, preparing for his role in Tootsie, insisted that the make-up artist make him look like “a real woman.” When viewing the results, Mr. Hoffman commented that he indeed looked like a woman, but now he wanted to look like a beautiful woman. The makeup artist told him he could do nothing more.

This encounter led to a painful epiphany for Dustin Hoffman as he realized how long he had lived with the assumption that only beautiful women were truly interesting, and that if he indeed were a woman, many people would find him uninteresting. The full interview can be found here:

Reflections

How often do you make snap judgments about others based on their appearance? How often do you think others make similar judgments about you?

When was the last time you discovered there was more to a person than you initially thought?

Prayer

Open my eyes, Lord, to look beyond outward appearances and see what is in each person’s heart.
